Trump lauds 'brave' King Charles as shooting fails to derail state visit
Buckingham Palace recently confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla's four-day visit to the US would 'proceed as planned'
Donald Trump hailed King Charles as a "brave man" for not canceling an official visit to the US despite the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner over the weekend.
The four-day visit of the British monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, to the United States was in doubt following reports of an armed individual breaching security and discharging a firearm at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday, April 25.
However, it has now been confirmed that the royal couple will travel as planned.
Speaking on 60 Minutes, President Trump said, “[The King] is a great guy, and we look forward to it. He’s really a fantastic person and a tremendous representative, and he’s brave.
"We’re gonna have a great time, and he represents his nation like nobody else can," he added.
Meanwhile, the British ambassador in Washington told CBS News that “Our team has been in touch through the night and will be through the day to see whether the events of last night have any change in our operational planning."
"I’m very confident that Their Majesties will have the very best security throughout the visit," continued Sir Christian Turner.
He added, "I mean, [it’s] a sombre background after last night for all of us. But I still hope we’ll be able to showcase this moment and make it the celebration that it deserves to be."
