In artificial intelligence, cost-effectiveness is replacing efficiency as the tool to rule the tech landscape. China has laid the foundation of this competition.

DeepSeek is aggressively slashing prices for its just-released flagship V4 model, intensifying competition across China’s tech industry trying to rival Silicon Valley.

In a new price-based shake-up, AI company is offering 75 percent discount to developers that are using its freshly-unveiled DeepSeek-V4-Pro until May 5, 2026. Moreover, the company is also dropping fees for input cache spanning across its family of AI platform to 1/10th of the original price,

The announcement made on X will significantly lower the prices for frequent users who are using these AI models.

Is China triggering an AI price war?

DeepSeek’s recent move to slash prices can be seen as a push to revive a price-based war after a Chinese company sent shockwaves across the global tech industry by releasing the R1 last year.

Other tech giants including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are also competing with each other to release cutting-edge versions of AI models. Unlike DeepSeek-V4-Pro, the access to those models can be expensive for developers and users.

Akshar Keremane, co-founder of Bangalore-based AI startup O-Health, said “The pricing, open source availability and 1 million context window features all lower barriers for developers, startups and small enterprises.”

“It allows users to experiment at a model capability and scale that wasn’t available earlier,” said the entrepreneur, whose Gates Foundation-backed startup deploys AI in large hospitals and rural clinics.

The low-price model will also encourage the users to pivot to Chinese AI models, thereby giving Beijing an edge not only in the crowded global AI landscape but also in the competitive US-China race.

The DeepSeek-V4 model was released on Friday. There are two variants of the V4 model: the more powerful Pro with higher price range and the cheaper Flash variant.

What makes the DeepSeek-V4-Pro model distinct from other open-source models is its context window. The model can significantly process complex code bases, making it highly suitable for agentic workflows. Moreover, V4-Pro allows easy integration of Claude Code, OpenClaw and OpenCode.
