King Charles high-stakes US state visit to proceed, says Buckingham Palace
The gunfire incident cast a shadow over King Charles's state visit to the US
Ahead of King Charles's state visit to the US, gunfire broke out at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where the suspect was arrested, and President Donald Trump remained unhurt.
However, a shadow was cast on the monarch's high-profile visit, which had been in the works for months.
Not to mention, the state visit by Charles to mark the American 250th independence is billed as high-stakes for both countries' relations, which are at odds over several policies, as the US president said he will discuss "every" matter with the King.
Thus, Charles, carrying a heavy diplomatic responsibility, privately reached out to Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, after the shooting scare.
Now, a Palace spokesman has confirmed the visit will go ahead.
"Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of the government, we can confirm the state visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned."
"The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting underway tomorrow," the statement read.
