Palestinians head to polls in first elections since Israel’s war on Gaza

Palestinians have begun voting in municipal elections in the occupied West Bank and parts of Gaza, marking the first elections since the Gaza war began in 2023.

According to the Ramallah based Central Elections Commission, nearly 1.5 million people are registered to vote in the West Bank, alongside around 70,000 voters in the Deir el Balah area of Gaza.

Polling stations opened at 7:00AM local time, with voting taking place amid ongoing conflict in the region.

The elections come as much of Gaza continues to face severe humanitarian conditions.

According to reports, residents are struggling to meet basic needs during continued Israeli attacks.

The vote is the first time Palestinians have gone to the polls since Israel launched its military campaign in October 2023.

Despite the limited scope of voting in Gaza, officials say the elections are a significant moment for local governance, particularly in the West Bank.

The outcome is expected to shape municipal leadership in key areas, although the wider political situation remains uncertain due to the ongoing conflict.
