Pistons defence shines in Game 2 win over Magic as Detroit evens first-round series
Detroit’s physical approach was clear from the start as they held Orlando to just 33 percent shooting
The Detroit Pistons delivered a defensive display to beat the Orlando Magic 98-83 in Game 2, levelling their first-round playoff series at 1-1.
Detroit’s physical approach was clear from the start as they held Orlando to just 33 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers, while also recording 11 blocks.
“When we play defence at the level we’re capable of, it triggers everything for us,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said, according to Sportsnet.
“We can be an elite defensive team, a disruptive defence. It's Pistons basketball. That’s what it looks like. We had one off night and it came at a bad time.”
Isaiah Stewart led the defensive effort, registering two blocks including a key denial of Paolo Banchero.
“I’m willing to lay my body on the line to make those plays for the energy,” Stewart said.
Detroit seized control in the third quarter with a decisive 30-3 run, outscoring Orlando 38-16 in the period. The Pistons then closed out the game comfortably in the fourth.
The victory also ended Detroit’s 11-game home playoff losing streak, the longest in NBA history.
Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley credited Detroit’s intensity, saying: “They did a heck of a job of reaching, grabbing and holding.”
Meanwhile Banchero added: “They met us at the rim a few times, and they brought the intensity on defence.”
