Trump shares 'very good news' on Truth Social amid uncertainty in Iran talks
US President Donald Trump says he has been informed that Iran will release eight women protesters
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday shared what he called a "Very good news" on his Truth Social account, announcing the release of "the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight."
"I have just been informed that the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight in Iran will no longer be killed," said Trump.
"Four will be released immediately, and four will be sentenced to one month in prison. I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution. "
On Tuesday, Trump requested that Iran release eight women held in its custody, saying that it would be “a great start to our negotiations”.
“I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so. Please do them no harm!” he has said on Truth Social.
Iran’s judiciary on Tuesday dismissed reports that eight women detained over protests that shook the country were at risk of execution.
"Trump was misled once again by fake news," the judiciary's official Mizan Online website said, as cited by AFP.
"The women who were claimed to be on the verge of execution, some of them have been released, while others face charges that, if convictions are upheld, would at most result in imprisonment."
