Maple Leafs hold talks with Mats Sundin renewing speculation around Gary Roberts
Sundin was in Toronto meeting with team ownership, prompting excitement among fans still reeling from a disappointing season
The Toronto Maple Leafs have held exploratory talks with former captain Mats Sundin about a possible role within the organisation, according to TSN.
Reports last week revealed Sundin was in Toronto meeting with team ownership, prompting excitement among fans still reeling from a disappointing season.
However, TSN’s Darren Dreger told TSN 1050 that the discussions were “more exploratory than anything”.
Dreger said Sundin met directly with MLSE chief executive Keith Pelley and other members of the ownership group, though no specific position has been confirmed.
Any potential return would likely depend on the scale of the role. Dreger suggested Sundin may only consider relocating to Toronto if offered a prominent position within the club.
The former centre remains one of the most respected figures in franchise history, having captained the team for over a decade.
His possible involvement has sparked wider speculation among supporters about former players returning to the organisation, including renewed discussion around Gary Roberts.
While no formal offer has been announced, the meeting signals the Maple Leafs could be exploring structural changes following a difficult campaign.
