Former royal butler exposes King Charles, Queen Elizabeth's secret pranks
The former butler revealed the late Queen had a playful way of testing staff
King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth reportedly used to play harmless pranks on staff.
A former royal butler opened up about some lighthearted moments with the King and the Queen while speaking on behalf of Heart Bingo Online ahead of April Fool’s Day.
Grant Harrold, who worked for the King at Highgrove House between 2004 and 2011, recalled a prank involving Charles in Scotland, Harrold said, “I remember the head gardener was going out for a walk with King Charles, and the joke was The King wanted us to give him a rucksack full of stones.”
He explained that the gardener wore the heavy backpack and “could hardly move,” while antlers were attached to the back. “The King is involved in this joke and meets the gardener at the back of the house, and I promise you, if you'd seen it, you couldn't stop laughing. It was ridiculous. The way the antlers were positioned were literally at the top of his head.”
After walking “for quite a distance,” the gardener “was really struggling,” Harrold said, prompting Charles to step in. “He eventually said, ‘Oh, for God's sake, take that thing off.’”
The butler added that both Charles and Elizabeth enjoyed small teasing moments with staff.
He also noted Prince Harry was known for his sense of humor as the royal “was one of the biggest practical jokers.”
Harry used to “jumping out and scaring people and winding people up and all that kind of thing," noted Harrold.
The former butler also recalled once becoming the subject of a prank from Queen Elizabeth. “She came up and stopped in front of me and said something inaudible,” Harrold said, admitting he “had no idea what she said.” Since the Queen “was waiting for an answer,” he replied, “Yes, Your Majesty,” to which she said, “Very good.”
He later learned it was a playful test. “I was told that what The Queen used to do, she would come up to you and she would say something inaudible or something that didn't make sense to see how you reacted,”
