RCMP investigating fatal Stavely Alberta crash involving hockey team
Police said the semi was traveling northbound, while the passenger vehicle was heading east into Stavely
RCMP are investigating the fatal collision near Stavely, Alberta that claimed the lives of three junior hockey players earlier this month.
According to an RCMP release from the Claresholm detachment, officers responded around 11 a.m. to a collision involving a semi truck hauling gravel and a small passenger vehicle at an intersection on Highway 2 near Stavely.
Police said the semi was traveling northbound, while the passenger vehicle was heading east into the community.
The driver of the semi truck was treated for minor injuries. All three occupants of the passenger vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
RCMP identified the victims as 18-year-old J.J. Wright of Kamloops, 18-year-old Cameron Casorso of Kamloops, and 17-year-old Caden Fine of Alabama.
Earlier today, the Southern Alberta Mustangs confirmed in a social media statement that three players were killed on February 2 while traveling to a team practice.
The team said it is working closely with authorities and providing support to players, staff, and families.
“There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief,” the Mustangs said on social media.
“These young men were more than hockey players – they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home.”
