A royal expert has shared his sincere opinion after Meghan Markle's festive Netflix special dropped this morning, with the Duchess sharing her knowledge of British Christmas crackers with US celebrity guests.
Speaking to The Sun, royal expert Hugo Vickers shared his opinion, labelling the show “cringe”.
“I mean, it’s as if she’s invented Christmas, and frankly, she didn’t”, the expert said and added “And where is the real, genuine Christmas spirit? You know, it’s just not there.”
Meghan shared the clip on Instagram, saying “It’s here. With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration is now playing on Netflix.”
The royal expert said, “The whole thing was very cringe-making. It’s a very high luxury end, version of Christmas. Artificial, expensive, unrelatable, and finally, and eventually, yes, cringe.”
He also questioned Meghan’s portrayal and usage of British culture with Christmas crackers.
Meghan talks about all the things that they were going to put into these crackers, and she talks about it as if no one’s ever made a cracker or pulled a cracker, he said and added “I mean, come on, what’s going on there?”
The royal expert continued, “And also, of course, naturally, sort of relating crackers to being an English Christmas, as if to say, this is what the royal family do.”
He said it seems as Meghan was trying to link it back to Christmases the duchess spent at Sandringham.
“It’s product placing and marketing and, you know, relating it to them, which is the ticket on which they travel.”
There are claims Christmas crackers remain a staple of British festive dining, with the royals using specially commissioned crackers from a company holding a Royal Warrant dating back to 1906.
