Ajax match abandoned after supporters ignite firework chaos
The match between Ajax and FC Groningen has permanently been halted after firework disruption
The Eredivisie match between Ajax and FC Groningen was abandoned after only six minutes as the fans ignited firework chaos at the stadium.
In a widely-circulated video on X, the Ajax supporters were seen setting off and throwing fireworks onto the pitch, leading to the suspension of a highly-anticipated match at a score of 0-0.
As the stadium filled with smoke, referee Bas Nijhuis halted the game forthwith.
The match resumed after 40 minutes of the wait. However, the resumption of the game was momentary as the fans of Ajax threw more fireworks onto the pitch.
Given the severity of the situation, the referee permanently called off the game.
In response to this chaotic situation, the Ajax have strongly criticized this shocking act, calling it "utterly outrageous firework display.”
Ajax also issued a statement, “"Ajax considers what happened in the stadium this evening to be utterly outrageous. We offer our apologies to everyone who has been affected in any way. The safety of spectators and players has been put at risk. That is unacceptable.”
“We emphatically distance ourselves from this misconduct. Fireworks do not belong in the stadium,” the statement further reads.
The match is expected to resume on Tuesday at 14:30 CET or 13:30 GMT. But the game will be played behind closed doors.
