Quentin Tarantino speaks out against the 'Hunger Games' franchise
Quentin Tarantino opens up about his views on the critically acclaimed franchise 'Hunger Games'
The Hunger Games is one of the most popular franchises of all time. However, Quentin Tarantino is not a fan of it.
He claims the film series is a copy of the 2000 Japanese movie Battle Royale, which the director has often said is his favourite movie.
“Battle Royale is based on a novel. I do not understand how the Japanese writer didn't sue Suzanne Collins for every f***** thing she owns. They just ripped off the f***** book!” he tells The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast.
Besides calling out Suzanne Collins, Quentin also slams literary critics for failing to recognize the similarities between her work and Koushun Takami's.
“Stupid book critics are not going to go watch a Japanese movie called Battle Royale, so the stupid book critics never called her on it."
He continues, "They talked about how it was the most original f***** thing they’d ever read. As soon as the film critics saw the film, they said, ‘What the f***? This is just Battle Royale except PG!
It is worth noting that Suzanne has previously denied that her work in the Hunger Games is inspired by Koushun's novel or Kinji's movie on which it was based.
“I had never heard of that book or that author until my book was turned in. At that point, it was mentioned to me, and I asked my editor if I should read it. He said: ‘No, I don't want that world in your head. Just continue with what you’re doing," she told the NYT in 2011.
The Hunger Games began in 2011, and a six-movie installment will be released next year.
