Prince William opens playground in Southport, honouring young lives lost
Prince William praises resilience of Southport families at new playground dedication
Prince William visited Churchtown Primary School in Southport today to officially open a new playground dedicated to the memory of the girls lost in the tragic July 2024 attack.
Speaking to children, staff, and their families, the Prince of Wales praised the resilience and unity of the community.
“Catherine and I were sadly not able to join you last week when this wonderful new playground had its grand opening,” William said.
“We are so happy to be with you today to celebrate this project and to say how proud we are of the community of Southport.”
He acknowledged the vision and determination of the parents and supporters who made the playground a reality.
The new playground features a stage, dedicated libraries, interactive play areas, and quiet zones, all thoughtfully designed to cater to the diverse needs and interests of children.
“Alex and Sergio, you told us you wanted to create a special playground in memory of the girls, and here we are. Your vision, supported by Jinnie, the Trust, and people’s generosity, has made this hope a reality.
This playground is a symbol of how the community has come together, a symbol of remembrance and resilience, a testament that love will always overcome tragedy.”
William also highlighted the courage of the schoolchildren and staff, noting their extraordinary efforts to support one another and honour their friends’ memories. “Many lives were changed on that terrible day.
To the teaching community here and at Farnborough Road, each and every one of you has gone above and beyond to help heal this incredible group of young people. Thank you.”
He concluded with heartfelt words for the families, “To Alex and Sergio, Lauren and Ben, Jenni and David you are parents united in grief.
We will always be here to support you. To everyone impacted on that day, you will never be forgotten. Enjoy this playground. Be brave, be joyful, and be kind. Thank you.”
