Russia’s ‘Enteromix’ cancer vaccine aces preclinical trials
Russia’s new cancer vaccine has passed preclinical trials
The Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia stated that a new cancer vaccine, “Enteromix”, has completed its successful preclinical trials. The breakthrough was revealed at a key international event, the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.
Veronika Skvortsova, the head of the FMBA, told Russian news agency TASS, “The research spanned several years, with the last three dedicated to mandatory preclinical studies. The vaccine is now ready for use; we are awaiting official approval.”
According to the officials, the study reportedly demonstrated 100% efficacy and safety in trials. Researchers observed a 60-80% reduction in tumour size and improved survival rates in animal models. No significant signs of toxicity were detected even with repeated doses.
"Enteromix" is a novel type of cancer vaccine that utilises the same mRNA technology that was employed in the development of the COVID-19 vaccine. Enteromix combines mRNA technology with four harmless viruses to target cancer cells and supercharge the body’s immune system to fight the disease.
The first version of the Enteromix will deal with colorectal cancer. However, researchers are also trying to develop versions for other cancers, including melanoma (a serious type of skin cancer) and glioblastoma (an aggressive type of brain tumour in adults).
The vaccine is considered “ready to use” and waiting for official approval from the Russian Ministry of Health. Once approved by the government, it will proceed with clinical trials on humans.
