Rory McIlroy to adopt Djokovic’s tactics amid Ryder Cup hostility
The Northern Irishman encourages teammates to follow Djokovic’s tactics while tackling Ryder Cup tensions
Rory McIlroy has announced to take a page from tennis star Novak Djokovic’s mentality to handle the hostile American crowds at the Ryder Cup in New York.
In the press release, The Northern Irishman encouraged European teammates and explained how Djokovic’s “best mentality” uplifted the morale of his team before their spectacular victory over the USA in Rome two years ago.
In this year’s Ryder Cup, McIlroy and the European team is set to be confronted by a belligerent and biased crowd at Bethpage Black for September, 26-28.
McIlroy was also impressed by the composure of Djokovic against the hostile crowd in US Open quarter-final victory over Taylor Fritz.
“It was a very pro-American crowd. He’s been the best at handling that. He’s had to deal with it his whole life, whether it’s playing against an American in New York or playing against Roger [Federer] or Rafa [Nadal],” said McIlroy.
"He came and spoke to us a little bit about that stuff last time in Rome. So maybe taking a leaf out of his book and channelling that energy the right way. But again, all we can do is control our reaction and our emotions to it,” he added.
In the Ryan Cup, the team Europe is prepared to grab the victory for the first time since the miracle in Medinah winning in 2012.
Luke Donald, European captain has completed his six picks. Out of 12 players who secured victory for Europe in Rome, 11 will return to the US for the upcoming competition.
