Shah Rukh Khan reportedly consumed shots of rum for authenticity in portraying the alcoholic character in the film Devdas, which marked his first collaboration with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
During a recent interview, Tiku Talsania, Shah Rukh's co-actor in the film, disclosed that the Pathaan actor would consume alcohol during the shoot as he felt it was essential for the character.
Tiku revealed that Shah Rukh believed it was crucial to have liquor in the eyes for his character to appear genuine.
He shared, “We were shooting in the afternoon under the scorching sun and he was taking shots of rum one after another. I said, ‘What are you doing? We have to act’.” Shah Rukh responded to Tiku in a Devdas-like manner, said, Sir, acting will happen. But the inebriation won’t reflect in my eyes. What about that?.”
Tiku also said, “That is a fantastic thing. Acts a bit drunk You can pretend to be drunk, but if the alcohol doesn’t reflect in his eyes, then how would the scene work? And for Devdas, not having daaru (alcohol) in his eyes…”
He then praised Shah Rukh as a "genius" who dedicates himself thoroughly to his character.
The film, Devdas was released was July 12, 2002, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai.
