Western elites had their worries about Giorgia Meloni as prime minister when she initially came to power in Italy in 2022 since she had previously declared her support for Nazism.
But after two years, the far-right leader has accomplished a significant political victory, according to Politico.
Notably, voters in the United States will select between incumbent Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump in November, and Meloni has interested supports for the both
Marco Damilano, an Italian political expert, stated that she is "by far the closest politician to Trump in Italy." Additionally, "her government would be best positioned on the European level" to forge connections with the Trump team.
Nicola Procaccini, who co-leads Meloni’s faction in the European Parliament, said about their preferred winning candidate of the US election: “We hope that Trump will win. But obviously Giorgia is also the leader of the Italian government and she has a very good relationship with the president of the United States, Joe Biden.”
The side of Meloni is attempting to be dualistic. In February, she hosted a special G7 meeting with a focus on Ukraine and visited Kyiv on the second anniversary of Russia's invasion. On the one hand, she is making a lot of efforts to make sure her pro-Ukraine and pro-Nato credentials are intact.
On the other hand, she is making every effort to lure Maga Republicans who oppose Ukraine by establishing connections with Trump's team through members of her far-right Brothers of Italy party who live in Florida.
