Police discover six dead bodies in San Bernardino County desert
Earlier, count of deceased was reported as five, but later it was increased to six as police found another body Wednesday
US media reported Wednesday at least six people were found dead in a desert area near Highway 395 in El Mirage, — 35 miles east of Lancaster — in San Bernardino County desert, as authorities responded to a wellness check at the scene.
The deceased people were found near a minivan and SUV on a dirt road at around 8pm, the NBC Los Angeles reported.
Authorities cordoned off the scene with a tape and commenced an investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident, after discovering the bodies.
Earlier, the count of the deceased was reported as five, but later it was increased to six as police found another body Wednesday.
Officials did not release any identities of the deceased victims as the bodies were at the scene, according to the news report.
Mara Rodriguez, public information officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, said: “It's going to be heartbreaking no matter what they discover out there as far as the circumstances, so our investigators will do their best to wrap this up quickly and get all the info possible to bring justice to those folks out there."
Officials found two vehicles — a silver minivan and a dark blue SUV. The cause of death was also not immediately clear.
According to officials, the vehicles were damaged as their windows were shattered.
It remains to be identified if there was a shooting, however, authorities said they noticed signs of gunshot holes.
In a press conference, authorities said the El Mirage scene is the only location involved in the investigation.
