At least three police officers have reportedly been killed and 10 others wounded following a tragic explosive attack in Jalisco, Mexico, according to Governor Enrique Alfaro.

Police officers and employees from the state prosecutor's office were the target of the attack and were brutally attacked with explosives. Governor Alfaro expressed shock at the incident, saying it shows the power of organised crime organisations and presents a problem for the entire Mexican state.

The Jalisco New Generation cartel, a formidable drug trafficking organisation that operates throughout the nation and engages in conflicts with other rival syndicates, has its operational headquarters in Jalisco, a state in western Mexico.

Authorities are actively looking into the incident, but the reason for the attack is still unknown.

The Jalisco security cabinet is constantly meeting to gather data and identify who could be behind the "unprecedented" explosion.

The attack was reported after a car with five people inside was discovered on fire in the Guadalajara neighbourhood of Tlajomulco de Zuniga. Ambulances and forensic investigators were dispatched to the scene to aid the injured and gather data.

Reports suggest that the explosion occurred near the vehicle in which the security officials were travelling. Authorities are examining whether a grenade or a homemade mine was used, noting that the Jalisco New Generation cartel has employed similar devices in the past.

This incident follows a recent drone attack on a house in the town of Apatzingan in Michoacan, which resulted in one person being wounded. While car-bomb attacks are relatively uncommon in Mexico, there was a car bomb explosion in Guanajuato in June, killing a National Guard member and injuring others.

Additionally, on Tuesday, 13 security personnel who had been taken captive by protesters in Guerrero were released after negotiations with authorities. It was later revealed that the protesters had been infiltrated by a criminal group. Guerrero has long been plagued by violence stemming from turf wars between drug cartels.

The overall security situation in Mexico remains challenging, with more than 340,000 recorded murders and approximately 100,000 disappearances since the start of a military anti-drug offensive in 2006. The majority of these crimes are attributed to various criminal organisations operating within the country.
