ISLAMABAD: The dream of government employees of having a modest increase in their salaries came crashing down on Wednesday, as they did not get even a single penny raise in the first budget 2013-2014 presented by the Nawaz Sharif-led government. However, the pensioners were lucky to have a 10 percent increase in pensions.
In his budget speech, Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar announced an increase of 10 percent in pensions; the low-end pensioners got an increaseproposed an increase of 15-20 percent increase in the salaries of government employees, the government changed its mind in the last minute and decided to freeze their pay structure at the current level this financial year.
Sources in the Finance Ministry said during the cabinet meeting Dar expressed his inability to increase the salaries of government employees.The hardships of government employees will compound further in the coming days, as the rate of GST has been increased from 16 percent to 17 percent.
The sources said a comprehensive policy might be devised for restructuring the pay and salary structure of government employees by the middle of the next financial year.
