PESHAWAR: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) announced alliance in the Cantonment Board Peshawar for election of the vice-chairman and reserved seats in the board.
The announcement was made at a news conference here on Wednesday. It was addressed by district presidents of JI and PPP Sabir Hussain Awan and Zulfiqar Afghani. The elected members Waris Khan Afridi for ward-1, Yadullah Bangash for ward-3 and Atif Ali Khan for ward-5 were also present on the occasion.
Waris Khan, who had won the election in an independent capacity with the JI supporting him, also announced to join the JI.Sabir Hussain Awan said that after Waris Khan’s decision to join the JI and due to the alliance between JI and PPP, they have got clear majority in the Cantonment Board. He said they have decided to give the reserved seats for the minority community and women to the PPP while the vice-chairman would be from JI.
He said that Waris Khan Afridi would be their candidate for vice-chairmanship.He said the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf should respect their mandate. He said they would better serve the residents of the Cantonment Board Peshawar through their unity.
While announcing his decision to join the JI, Waris Afridi said he remained an active member of Awami National Party throughout his political career but the party wanted to oust him from the Cantonment Board elections despite being an elected member in the past. “But by the grace of Allah, love of my people and support of the JI, I made it to the Cantonment Board,” he added. PPP leader Zulfiqar Afghani also spoke on the occasion.
