Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity if left unchecked and not managed carefully.
Gates has raised concerns over the alarms surrounding AI dangers, with his new comments coming as technology leaders and the government shift focus on how to handle fears of an AI-crafted doomsday.
According to excerpts NBC released today, AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that can cause a billion deaths.
In a memo released in August, Gates defined AI as a technology carrying great importance and leaving a lasting mark on the future. He further argued that AI will either be the greatest equalizer or the worst source of injustice.
Gates said the government and political parties must collaborate immediately to establish guardrails for AI development.
Earlier, Anthropic CEO Darion Amodei also said that it is the time for the pace of artificial intelligence to be slowed, referencing an incident in which AI agents from OpenAI and Hugging Face executed unsanctioned cyber operations on unrelated targets and attempts to hack the system evaluating their performance.
