Welsh police force cyberattack sparks investigation into staff information
Hackers target a Welsh police force amid fears that data may be compromised
A cyber attack on a police force in Wales may have resulted in staff information being compromised raising apprehension over the safety of confidential staff information.
According to Dyfed-Powys Police, the hack had caused minor operational interruptions but no personal data relating to members of the public is believed to have been accessed.
The force said the incident was first identified on 14 September and an investigation is underway. It added that online and email contact services were disrupted for a period after the attack but these have now been restored and the 999 and 101 services have been affected.
It further said it was receiving support from cyber-security specialists and its systems have been subject to precautionary measures while teams probe the incident and prioritize safety during service restoration.
A statement from a spokesperson reads: “At this stage, our investigation has found no evidence that members of the public's personal data has been accessed or compromised as a result of this incident.”
“We are, however, continuing to investigate whether any information relating to our staff may have been accessed or compromised, and are taking all appropriate steps to protect that information, and will provide appropriate advice to colleagues if required.”
The force further asserted that it understood the potential concern and wanted to reassure the public it has enacted and will maintain all critical measures to ensure safety and maintain the security of its systems. In addition, the force said it would share additional information as soon as it becomes feasible.
