Gavin Casalegno, star of The Summer I Turned Pretty, responded to harsh criticism on his character, Jeremiah Fisher.
In the third and final season of the drama, the show kicked off with a four-year time jump, showing Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) as a couple attending Finch University together.
The pair then, after a brief dramatic break up, get engaged and begin planning their wedding against their parents' objections.
Fans online have criticised Jeremiah's actions, including cheating on Belly when they had briefly broken up and called him selfish for choosing to stay in Boston, among many other things.
In conversation with The New York Times, the actor responded to fans reaction, reminding people that he is not his character.
"They tend to dislike him, yes. I don’t check Instagram anymore, so I really haven’t seen that much hate," he told the newspaper. "The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny."
He added, "I think it’s important to also understand and realise that this is a fictional story and it’s also not me."
Casalegno went on to talk about the overwhelming amount of hate the character receives. "I don’t think there's a single human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens."
Referring the streaming platform, Amazon's strict policy on bullying, he noted, "I think that’s why Amazon did a good job of stepping in and being like, 'Hey, no bullying.' Though, not really going so well."
The Summer I Turned Pretty third and final season airs new episodes every Wednesday, with the series finale scheduled for September 17.
