ABBOTTABAD: Environmental activists on Thursday expressed concern over an alleged attempt to undermine an environmental conservation initiative and renewed their resolve to counter the move.
The observation was made during a meeting of the Gallies Biosphere Reserve Management Committee. The members resolved to actively counter misinformation campaigns and vigorously defend the Reserve’s designation against legal challenges.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to the Gallies Biosphere Reserve, denouncing what it described as a “baseless misinformation campaign” circulating across various forums. It pledged to rebut false narratives using all available legal, institutional, and public communication channels.
A key focus was the ongoing legal challenge via a writ petition filed by an individual identified as not being a bona fide resident of the region.During deliberations, the committee emphasized the core purpose of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves: promoting conservation, sustainable development, and harmonious coexistence between communities and nature.
The members expressed concern that certain individuals, allegedly supported by elements within the Forest Department, were opposing the declaration - a stance they characterized as disappointing and regressive.
“The Biosphere Reserve status is a critical environmental achievement, a source of regional pride, and a foundation for sustainable development,” stated a committee member, adding that challenging it disregards years of dedicated scientific research and community collaboration. The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge to uphold the integrity of the Gallies Biosphere Reserve and to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure its enduring protection and success.
