Govt urged to ensure security to lawyers

PESHAWAR: The members of Peshawar High Court Bar Association and the Peshawar District Bar Association have expressed serious concern over the rising number of attacks on lawyers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In a joint general body meeting held here, the legal community strongly condemned the recent murder of Advocate Mian Jamal Shah and called for immediate action from the government.

The meeting was presided over by PHC Bar president Aminur Rehman, which was attended by president of the Peshawar District Bar, Qaiser Zaman, and other office-bearers Lawyers demanded the immediate implementation of the Lawyers Protection Act, emphasizing that the deteriorating law and order situation is putting not just lawyers but ordinary citizens at risk. The meeting unanimously demanded the arrest of Jamal Shah’s killers within 48 hours.

“The continuous attacks on members of the legal fraternity reflect the worsening security situation in the province,” said one of the speakers at the meeting. “If the government fails to act, we will be compelled to take direct action and all responsibility will lie with the provincial authorities,” he added.
