PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police force has recommended to the provincial government to enhance the basic pay scale (BPS) of the constables, head constables and assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs).
The recommendations were made in pursuance of the government’s vision of enhancing the pay scales of non-gazetted officials serving in the provincial government.“The police department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in an official summary sent to the chief minister has proposed that the posts of ASI be upgraded from Basic Pay Scale BS-09 to BS-12, head constable be upgraded from BS-07 to BS-09 and 10 percent of the total sanctioned posts of constables be upgraded from BPS 5 to 7,” an official told The News.
The official added that the IGP sent the summary to the provincial government on Friday.During the past seven years, as many as 815 personnel of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police have embraced martyrdom and 1,787 cops have been injured in the war against terrorism.
“A large majority of these heroes of the province and the Police Department comprise of the jawans from the ranks of constables, head constables and ASIs,” said the statement.“Owing to the limited number of seats in the next rank, majority of the constables serving in the Police Department are not promoted throughout their careers despite having qualified the requisite promotion courses and examinations,” said an official communiqué.
A head constable serving in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa undergoes different training programmes and is expected to perform duty as a supervisory officer in challenging circumstances, the statement added.
Due to this distinct set of responsibilities and expectations from a head constable in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa it is only fair that their pay scales be enhanced so as to encourage them to perform duty with devotion and commitment.
The rank of ASI, a large majority of which is inducted through competitive examination through the Provincial Public Service Commission is a pivotal rank in the force as the officers inducted in this rank are the future field commanders.
The officers inducted or serving in rank of ASI can thus prove to be real change agents towards the improvement of the department’s working. The enhancement in the pay scale for the rank of ASI has therefore been proposed with a view to attract educated quality human resource.
“The proposal sent by the Police Department for enhancement in the pay scales of the said ranks, if approved, will go a long way in encouraging these brave and valiant sons of the province who are pitted against the terrorists and extremists operating in the province,” said a police official.
