LONDON: The UK Met Office has issued a heatwave alert for Wednesday with temperatures expected to surpass the highest mercury reading of 36.5 degrees Celsius recorded nearly a decade ago.

Tropical air being pushed over England from Europe has resulted in a level 3 heatwave warning which is one step short of a ‘national emergency’.

Experts have advised, commuters avoid using public transport during rush hour, when tubes are packed, as temperatures could reach 36 degrees Celsius.

Speaking to the local Evening Standard, Dr. Angie Bone from Public Health England (PHE) said, "Employers should ensure indoor areas are kept cool and consider allowing these individuals to travel to or from their place of work during cooler, or less busy times of the day,"

The heatwave in England has also caused rail disruptions with train services being cancelled out of fear that the heat could cause rail tracks to buckle.

Many services out of London Paddington were cancelled after speed restrictions were imposed in light of track safety.

Wimbledon Heat Rule

The Championship, Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament has been long associated with depressing rain delays. However, due to the heatwave new emergency playing rules have been introduced.

Organizers told AFP that the new heat rule will allow for a 10-minute break between the second and third sets. However this rule is only applicable to women players.
