A US-national, Debora Lobo, who was working as the vice principal of Jinnah Medical and Dental College, was critically injured when unidentified assailants shot at her several times near the Medicare roundabout on Shaheed-e-Millat Road when she was driving home to DHA.
A printed leaflet was found at the crime scene stating that the attack was carried out by Islamic State (IS) to avenge the killing of five militants, affiliated with the Ilyas Kashmiri group, in Keamari by the Rangers a few days ago.
Ferozabad police said Lobo had just left the college in her car (Z-6062) when armed men on a motorcycle shot at her several times and fled, leaving behind a printed leaflet claiming responsibility for the attack.
A bullet hit her in the jaw and she was rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital in critical condition, they said. Till Thursday night, her condition was reported be critical.
DIG East Munir Shaikh confirmed to The News Lobo was injured in a targeted attack. He said the investigators had ruled out the possibility that it was a botched robbery.
“We have acquired footage from closed-circuit cameras installed in her route footage and were trying to identify her attackers.
“Eyewitnesses are also being questioned and hopefully we will soon be able to arrest the culprits,” he said.
City police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo also said the attack on Lobo was targeted and suspected banned outfits to have been behind it.
“We found a printed leaflet from the place of attack, which says it was carried out by militants of Daulat-e-Islamiyah to avenge the killings of five militants killed in Keamari,” he said.
Thebo said the attackers had been following and watching the victim’s movement. They were waiting for her to drive past and when she did, two men on a motorcycle shot at her multiple times with a 9mm pistol and sped away.
Officials of Jinnah Medical and Dental College said though Lobo was not a doctor, she had been associated with the educational institute since 1998 when it was formed. At present she was working as vice president of student affairs, they said. Following the attack, officials from US consulate in Karachi visited the crime scene and met police officials.
Though none of the officials from the consulate or the embassy spoke on record, sources in the Karachi police said the US officials and investigators had started a parallel investigation and had also offered to provide technical assistance to the police to track down the culprits. — By Waqar Bhatti

We will continue to ambush you and attack you fiercely and kill you wherever you are until we besiege you to America and then God willing we will burn America down.”
In the end it stated that the attack on Lobo was to avenge the killing of five militants in Keamari by the Rangers.
