Calligraphy, or beautiful writing, is the most revered form of artistic expression in the Islamic world. It is the most highly regarded and the most fundamental element of Islamic art. The employment of calligraphy as something ornamental has a definite aesthetic appeal.
One must, at the same time, keep it in mind that calligraphy is principally a means to transmit a text, albeit in a decorative form.
It was as a testament to this definition of calligraphy that a calligraphic exhibition was inaugurated at the Grandeur Art Gallery, on Tuesday evening, featuring works of 14 artists, all meticulous in their execution.
Fifty-three works adorned the walls of the gallery which were pieces of art.
There was a really inspirational piece of art, the Kalma-e-Tayyaba emblazoned across the canvas amid very beautifully unearthly floral patterns. It was beautifully surrealistic. The artist was Jamshed Khan.
There was Aqib Faiz’s work with painted beads and sea shells embedded into the religious verses
and again a surrealistic blending of colours.
Similarly, there were two specimens highlighting the words, “Al-Rehman”, and “Al-Raheem” by
Lahore-based RBM Ali.
This, of course, is not to say that the other specimens were any less inspirational. All of them were masterpieces and made wonderful means for divine contemplation. The exhibition runs up until July 8, 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.
