A judge ordered the prison authorities on Wednesday to ensure Shahrukh Jatoi appears for his trial over charges of escaping from the country by using a fake passport and other documents.

Jatoi had fled to Dubai from Karachi after he along with another young man, Siraj Talpur, shot dead university student Shahzeb Khan in December 2012. The District Malir judicial magistrate noted that the prison authorities had failed to make sure Jatoi showed up to face the trial over the last five years. The judge observed that the trial had been pending for five years and that it was a serious matter.

The court expressed it displeasure over Jatoi’s no-show on the part of the prison authorities, and ordered his appearance on March 16. Earlier, the court was informed that Jatoi had been awarded the capital punishment in the Shahzeb murder case and it was hard to rush him to the courtroom due to security issues. The judge was further told that in the fraud case, the accused was on bail for Rs100,000.
