Majority rules
This refers to the article, ‘Right questions, wrong answers’ (Oct 24) by Zaigham Khan. It was a balanced article and correctly described the current political situation. However, there was one point which needs to be discussed. The writer has stressed that 17 percent votes in the 2013 elections means that 83 percent of the population of the country is against the PTI therefore Imran Khan cannot dictate his demands. If the math is same, the PML-N was also not supported by 70 percent of Pakistani in the elections. But, the party has been voted in power.
The support of the majority doesn’t necessarily mean that a party is the best in governance. The PML-N-led government is also repeating its past mistake. Billions are spent on projects like the Metro Bus service and the Orange Line Metro Train project that benefit only a few hundred thousand in the twin cities. The government has been ignoring basic issues like the deteriorating state of the education and health sectors, lack of employment, increasing foreign loans, unabated rate of inflation, unfavourable balance of payments etc. In this context, the demand of Imran Khan for a transparent inquiry about the Panama leaks was reasonable.
