Dealing with garbage
This refers to the letter, ‘Garbage in the city’, (Oct 26) by M Zeerak Chauhan. The writer talks about the state of cleanliness in Karachi. Garbage requires speedy disposal so that the spread of diseases and pollution can be minimised. There must be a site where all of the city’s garbage can be dumped. Closer to the site, incinerators should be installed for the combustion of waste. It must be noted that 8000 tonnes of garbage when burnt in incinerators can produce up to 10.0MW of electricity.
This can help with the energy crisis of the city. In fact, all other mega cities of the country can adopt this cost-effective waste treatment process. The chief ministers of the country are requested to consider this technique to solve the problems of the cities.
