ISLAMABAD: South Africa’s explosive all-rounder Donovan Ferreira has been handed the reins for their three-match T20 International series against Pakistan, beginning October 28 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The decision came after David Miller, originally appointed to lead in place of Aiden Markram, was ruled out due to a hamstring injury. A medical scan revealed a Grade I strain in his right hamstring, making him unavailable for the tour.

Ferreira, 26, who recently captained the Proteas in a one-off T20I against Namibia, now faces a major challenge to rally his troops in subcontinent conditions. Though South Africa lost that outing, Ferreira impressed selectors with his leadership temperament and ability to inspire younger players.

“It’s an incredible honour to lead my country again,” Ferreira said. “Pakistan is a tough place to tour, conditions, crowds, and expectations all test your mettle. But we’re here to compete hard and play fearless cricket.”

The remaining squad landed in Islamabad in the early hours of Friday. The touring party, however, will be without pace spearhead Gerald Coetzee and emerging left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka, both sidelined with injuries.

In their absence, Tony de Zorzi and Matthew Breetzke have been drafted into the T20 line-up, strengthening South Africa’s batting depth and giving the side a more youthful look. Before beginning their training sessions, the players visited the Faisal Mosque, taking in the serenity of one of Islamabad’s most iconic landmarks. Later, the team attended a reception hosted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where the Prime Minister welcomed the visitors and expressed hope that the series would further strengthen sporting ties between the two nations.

The series, set to ignite Rawalpindi under lights, promises high-voltage cricket as both sides look to fine-tune their combinations ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
