PFF’s vision shows commitment to global standards
LAHORE: The Pakistan Football Federation’s recent double signing of Nolberto Solano and Jorge Castañeira has drawn widespread attention and cautious optimism from fans, coaches, and regional federations alike.
After years of inconsistent performance and organisational flux, PFF’s bold international pivot appears to signal a commitment to professionalisation and global standards. “Pakistan football needed a figure who commands respect globally — and Solano checks every box,” said a senior PFF official, speaking off the record. “His experience working with youth and senior setups alike could bring continuity across levels, which we’ve struggled to maintain.”
Solano, whose CV includes stints in the Premier League, Boca Juniors, and the Peruvian national setup, spent much of Monday reviewing Pakistan’s current player pool. Sources within PFF suggest that he’s keen to identify homegrown talent and build tactical cohesion across senior and U23 squads ahead of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers slated for October.
Meanwhile, Jorge Castañeira’s appointment is being hailed as a potential game-changer for player conditioning. “Fitness has been our Achilles heel,” said former national player Saadullah Khan. “If Jorge brings even half the discipline he’s known for, we’ll see fewer injuries, better transitions, and longer careers.”
The key challenges right now being faced in football is the infrastructure readiness. Can Pakistan’s footballing facilities support the kind of training Solano and Jorge demand? It’s a million dollars question. It also raises more questions; Will merit prevail under Solano’s regime, especially with youth squads? And, Will this translate to better coaching and scouting standards across regional setups?
On their appointments, reactions were largely positive, with fans tweeting praise for PFF’s “forward-thinking leadership” and Gilani’s “audacity to dream big.” Others struck a cautious tone, citing past struggles with consistency and implementation.
