ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has returned the diamond necklace of the Turkish first lady.
The necklace was submitted to the Nadra authorities by the staff of Gilani after the Cabinet Division and Foreign Office refused to accept it.Gilani’s Principal Staff Officer Aitzaz Niazi took the necklace to Toshakhana (gifts repository) in Islamabad but the authorities refused to deposit it, saying it does not follow their standard operating procedure.
Niazi was advised to submit the necklace to the PM Secretariat or the Foreign Office but both the offices refused to accept it.It is pertinent to mention here that the necklace was donated in 2010 by the wife of Turkish President (then prime minister) Recep Tayyip Erdogan to help the flood-affected people of Pakistan.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had recently ordered the FIA to conduct an inquiry into the disappearance of the necklace. The FIA on Sunday issued a notice to Gilani to return the necklace of the Turkish first lady. The investigative authority had warned Gilani that if the necklace was not submitted within three days, a case would be lodged against him.
