LAHORE: In a nail-biting encounter at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday night, Quetta Gladiators pulled off a r emarkable victory against Karachi Kings, winning by just five runs in the 15th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025.

Defending a modest total of 142, Quetta Gladiators showcased exceptional bowling and fielding to restrict Karachi Kings to 137 for eight in their allotted 20 overs, igniting celebrations in the Gladiators’ camp and leaving the Kings stunned.

After winning the toss and electing to field first, Karachi Kings had initially dominated proceedings, reducing Quetta to a precarious 20 for 3 inside four overs. The early dismissals of Saud Shakeel (7), Finn Allen (1), and Rilee Rossouw (10) left the Gladiators reeling.

Kusal Mendis (36) attempted to stabilize the innings before falling at 69 for 5, setting the stage for the game-changing partnership between Hasan Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf. The duo put on a crucial 59-run stand for the sixth wicket, with Faheem Ashraf playing the aggressor’s role, smashing 43 runs studded with four boundaries and three towering sixes. Hasan Nawaz contributed a valuable 35.

“That partnership between Faheem and Hasan was the turning point,” remarked Quetta’s captain after the match. “They gave us something to bowl at when we were in serious trouble.”

Once Hasan Nawaz departed at 128 for 6, Quetta’s lower order collapsed rapidly, losing their last five wickets for just 14 runs to be bundled out for 142 in 19.3 overs. Hasan Ali was the pick of the Karachi bowlers, claiming 3 for 33, while Mir Hamza (2-24) and Abbas Afridi (2-31) provided excellent support.

In reply, Karachi Kings suffered an early setback but recovered through an impressive 73-run second-wicket partnership between Tim Seifert and James Vince. Seifert was particularly aggressive, hammering 47 off just 26 deliveries, including five boundaries and two sixes, while Vince contributed a measured 30 off 29 balls.

Just when the Kings appeared to be cruising toward victory, Quetta’s bowlers orchestrated a remarkable comeback. Mohammad Amir (2-26) and Mohammad Wasim (2-22) led the charge with disciplined spells at crucial junctures, while Khurram Shahzad also claimed two wickets for 31 runs.

The turning point came when both set batsmen were dismissed in quick succession, triggering a middle-order collapse. Despite a fighting unbeaten 24 from Hasan Ali lower down the order, Karachi Kings fell agonizingly short of the target.

“We believed we could defend this total if we stuck to our plans,” said Mohammad Amir, who unleashed an aggressive bowling spell. “The pitch was offering something for the bowlers, and we just needed to hit the right areas consistently.”

The victory marks a significant turnaround for Quetta Gladiators in their Lahore leg of the tournament and keeps their playoff hopes alive. For Karachi Kings, this defeat will be particularly disappointing, having had the match firmly in their grasp at several stages.

Both teams will now regroup before their next matches, with Quetta Gladiators looking to build on this momentum and Karachi Kings determined to bounce back from this heart-breaking defeat.
