Five tankers set alight after man crushed to death by dumper
Another citizen became a victim of a speeding dumper truck near Jail Chowrangi, PIB Colony, late on Monday night, after which an enraged mob torched five water tankers.
Gulshan Rasheed, 35, was crushed to death in the New Town police remit. The incident took place on University Road, near Jail Chowrangi. Police said Rasheed was riding on his motorcycle when a recklessly driven dumper crushed him under its wheels, badly injuring him. The victim was immediately moved to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
SSP Farrukh Raza, chief of District East, said that after the incident the dumper driver tried to escape from the spot, and a patrollingmobile chased the dumper and brought it a halt. The police arrested the driver, identified as Inaamullah Sultan, and his helper, Ismail. They also seized the dumper and shifted the suspects to the police station. Moreover, an FIR will be registered after completion of legal formalities.
After the incident, an enraged mob present at the spot protested. Shortly, some 20 to 25 miscreants joined the protest and torched five water tankers passing from the street and also beat up the drivers.
Afterwards, a heavy contingent of police reached the spot near Jail Chowrangi, dispersed the mob and called in fire tenders for extinguishing the fire. The firemen after a battle of an hour extinguished the fire. According to the fire office, they sent two fire tenders to the spot. A case has been reported and investigations are underway.
DIG Usman Ghani, chief of East Range, who also reached the spot, talked to the media. DIG Ghani said the incident of setting tankers on fire occurred near Jail Chowrangi. A heavy contingent of police was present at the scene, and the SSP himself had also reached the scene. No one will be allowed to commit arson, the DIG said and added that anyone involved in committing arson would be arrested.
Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar took notice of the incident and sought details from the Sindh police. Talking to the media outside the New Town police station, officials of the Dumper Association said that to prevent accidents, emergency numbers are being installed on dumpers and water tankers, which can be contacted to file a complaint regarding the driving of these vehicles.
