Awais Leghari detailed Pakistan’s comprehensive reform plan aimed at addressing deficiencies in the power sector
ISLAMABAD: A delegation of the US Department of Treasury, led by Assistant Secretary Brent Neiman, met with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Leghari, on Thursday to explore potential collaboration in the energy sector.
During the meeting, Awais Leghari detailed Pakistan’s comprehensive reform plan aimed at addressing deficiencies in the power sector. These reforms are designed to improve the country’s energy mix and enhance private sector participation in the distribution and transmission of electricity. Leghari emphasized that these changes are intended to improve the quality of service provided to the people of Pakistan.
In discussions on debt management, Leghari introduced a fan replacement programme that aims to save energy and mitigate seasonal variations in energy demand. He also underscored the need for US technical support to address the seasonal generation and demand gap and sought American assistance in securing international financing for Pakistan’s power sector at more favourable rates.
Assistant Secretary Neiman praised Pakistan’s power sector reform initiatives and assured the delegation of the US Treasury Department’s cooperation in addressing Pakistan’s power sector challenges.
The meeting marks a significant step towards strengthening bilateral cooperation in energy sector between the United States and Pakistan, with both parties committed to working together to achieve sustainable energy solutions.
