CTD arrests man for ‘spying for Zeinabiyoun Brigade’

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Sindh police has claimed to have arrested a man associated with the Iranian Zeinabiyoun Brigade that was involved in attacking religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani in Karachi.

The arrest was made by the CTD in collaboration with an intelligence agency during a raid conducted in the Soldier Bazaar area of the city.

During the interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to working for the hostile agency of the neighbouring country Iran. He also allegedly claimed to have been gathering information about high-value targets in the city.

According to CTD spokesperson, the arrested suspect also disclosed that his two associates were involved in the attacks carried out on important personalities of rival factions in the city.

The spokesperson said the suspect has been identified as Syed Muhammad Mehdi, who used to conduct recce of the high-value targets and then share the information with his companions, namely Syed Raza Jafri and Abid Raza, who later killed the targets.

The arrested suspect also kept explosives and other weapons provided by hostile agencies at his house, and he also used to provide hand grenades and other weapons before the targets were attacked, added the spokesperson.

The spokesperson said Mehdi was also involved in buying and selling weapons and ammunition, adding that according to the suspect, Jafri and Raza were also involved in attacking Mufti Usmani as well as targeting various high-profile targets belonging to rival sects.
