PM’s visit

This refers to the letter ‘PM at Lums’ (Nov 2) by Areeba Batool Qureshi. This reminds me of the famous old story ‘the emperor has no clothes’.

I will advise all ministers and high officials not to visit colleges and universities. Students do not care about restrictions on free speech. They ask embarrassing questions without any fear.

Some letter-writers have appreciated Lums students for the courage they show for questioning the late arrival of the PM and other questions that were not relevant for a caretaker PM. I may have agreed had the questions not looked politically motivated with a particular brand of mindset dominant in certain parts of the country. It seemed obvious to me that the entire episode was done to go viral on social media and shift the narrative in favour of a certain political party. The caretaker PM’s replies were good but were simply ignored. It was also quite rude of these young people to put the guest they had invited in a humiliating position.

I think that this kind of aggression is what resulted in the May 9 incident. Also, this feeling is not reflective of hundreds of thousands of students across the country. The university the PM visited also hosts a section of students from the elite class, who move abroad for higher studies and job opportunities, leaving the country oscillating between hope and despair.
