In Lahore, the heart of Pakistan, amidst the unpredictability of 2025, where regional conflicts cast long shadows and unmerciful weather from rain to scorching heat, we created our own sanctuary of peace and celebration. The Interdepartmental Cricket Tournament at Shaukat Khanum Hospital, a tradition since 1995, marked a historic milestone this year: for the first time, women stepped onto the pitch as active participants, not just spectators. This was more than a game; it was a defiant act of joy, resilience, and inclusion in a world that has often felt fractured and riddled with divisions.
The Interdepartmental Cricket Tournament has been a cornerstone of community, uniting employees across disciplines in Pakistan’s beloved sport. Initiated by Farrukh Aziz, the tournament has grown into a cherished tradition, fostering healthy competition among doctors, nurses, administrators, and support staff. But in 2025, the tournament took on profound significance with the inclusion of women matches.
Shaukat Khanum’s leadership, including CEO Dr Faisal Sultan and CMO Dr Aasim Yusuf, recognised the need for change. They viewed the tournament as a platform to promote equity and well-being, particularly for women in demanding healthcare roles. Department heads rallied, encouraging female staff to participate, even as some hesitated, unsure of their place in a sport long claimed by men. Against this backdrop, the tournament became a symbol of defiance. Each match was a moment to pause, celebrate peace, and honour the resilience of a community united in their fight against cancer. For the women who took to the field, it was a chance to rewrite the narrative, proving that cricket could belong to everyone, regardless of gender or circumstance.
The journey began tentatively. Many women, unaccustomed to cricket, expressed doubts. “I’d never held a bat before”. But encouragement from colleagues, coupled with dedicated practice sessions, sparked a shift. The hospital’s cricket ground became a space of liberation. Cricket was discovered as a powerful outlet for stress and connection. “It was like reclaiming a part of ourselves,” one player shared. This breakthrough required overcoming cultural norms, logistical challenges, and the unpredictability of weather and regional tensions. The result was a vibrant testament to equity and empowerment.
Farrukh Aziz Khan, Chair of the Organising Committee, expressed gratitude to hospital leadership, CEO Dr Faisal Sultan and CMO Dr Aasim Yusuf for supporting this year’s cricket festival. Department heads also played a crucial role in encouraging female staff to participate in the inaugural women cricket tournament to make it a success.
Her passion and determination are truly inspiring and testament to the growing spirit of women’s cricket in the organisation.
The women’s participation challenged stereotypes, proving cricket could be a space for all. Each match became a celebration of peace and community. From hesitant first swings to victorious boundaries, the women of Shaukat Khanum showed that sports can break barriers and build bonds.
