Remembering Edhi
Dear Editor,
July 8, 2025, marked the ninth death anniversary of the legendary philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi. Edhi passed away on July 8, 2016, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of selfless service and unwavering dedication to humanity. Born in Gujarat, British India, Edhi migrated to Pakistan in 1947 and began his humanitarian work soon after.
Edhi’s personal struggles, particularly his mother’s illness and the state’s inability to assist, ignited his passion for philanthropy. In 1951, he opened his first clinic in Karachi, driven by idealism and hope. Over the years, Edhi and his team established numerous maternity wards, morgues, orphanages, shelters, and homes for the elderly, providing vital support to those in need.
Edhi’s remarkable work earned him international recognition, including a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest fleet of ambulances. His tireless efforts to serve the most vulnerable members of society continue to inspire generations. As we commemorate his ninth death anniversary, we honour his memory and reaffirm our commitment to upholding his values of compassion, kindness, and service to humanity.

Ban tobacco
Dear Editor,
In Pakistan, countless people are losing their precious lives on a regular basis at the hands of tobacco and smoking, while millions of people have respiratory disease, mostly due to smoking and using tobacco.
According to a news report, at least 100,000 people die annually due to tobacco and smoking.
I wish to clarify that the electronic cigarette is causing cardiovascular and respiratory problems too, because these cigarettes carry harmful chemicals which are toxic to humans and can cause health issues while nicotine increases the risk of heart diseases.
It is our humble request to the government and concerned authorities to take a serious step to totally ban the manufacture and import of cigarettes and tobacco.
