DID YOU KNOW?

The world’s highest polo ground is in the small village of Shandur in northern Pakistan.

Reflection

Every year in July, the majestic Shandur Pass in northern Pakistan comes alive with colour, culture, and competition during the famous Shandur polo festival. Shandur polo festival is a sports festival held annually from 7 to 9 July at Shandur in Gilgit-Baltistan. The polo tournament is played between the teams of Gilgit District and Chitral District, under freestyle rules. Situated at an altitude of around 12,000 feet, Shandur is often called the “Roof of the World” and boasts the world’s highest polo ground. This unique festival blends thrilling sportsmanship with vibrant cultural celebrations, attracting thousands of local and international visitors.

The highlight of the mela is the freestyle polo match between the teams of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan. Unlike conventional polo, the game played here is fierce, fast-paced, and without many formal rules. The rivalry between the two teams is intense, deeply rooted in regional pride and history. The matches are not only a test of skill but also of stamina and courage, played under the open sky in a dramatic mountain setting.

Over the years, several notable figures have attended or participated in the festival, adding to its prestige. Members of the British royal family and diplomats have occasionally visited as spectators. Renowned Pakistani figures like late President Pervez Musharraf and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto also expressed admiration for the event and its cultural significance. Famous polo players from across Pakistan have taken part in the matches, including Shahzada Sikander Ul Mulk, who was widely respected for his leadership and skill on the field. Their presence has helped elevate the profile of the festival on both national and international stages.

Shandur mela is more than just polo. It is a celebration of the rich traditions of the region. The event features folk music, traditional dances, local handicraft stalls, and cultural performances. Visitors get a chance to experience the unique customs, food, and hospitality of the people from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. Camping at the scenic Shandur Lake under the stars is another unforgettable part of the experience.

The origins of the festival date back to the early 20th century when British officers encouraged polo games in the region. Over time, this evolved into an annual celebration. Today, the Government of Pakistan and the tourism departments of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa organize the event, aiming to promote peace, cultural exchange, and tourism in the region.

Getting to Shandur is an adventure in itself. The journey involves long drives through rugged terrain, steep passes, and breathtaking valleys. But the scenic beauty, the warm hospitality, and the spirit of the festival make it well worth the effort.

Shandur Mela is not just a sporting event—it's a symbol of unity, culture, and the unbreakable spirit of the mountains. It showcases Pakistan’s natural beauty and cultural richness in a way few events can match, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique and exhilarating experience.
