After a screening at the Closing Reception of the 21st edition of the UK Asian Film Festival (UKAFF) London, last month, along with bagging the Best Picture, Audience Choice Award 2019 at the festival, Shazia Ali Khan’s Pinky Memsaab is again making headlines for all the right reasons.
Starring Hajra Yamin, Kiran Malik and Adnan Jaffer in lead roles, Pinky Memsaab was one of the final films screened as part of the 21st UK Asian Film Festival, which took place at HOME, Manchester from 30 April to 4 May, 2019
The film, praised by audiences and critics alike at UKAFF screenings in Edinburgh, Leicester and London, was screened on May 4 as part of the 3-day showcase.
Based in Dubai, the film highlights the intersecting lives of two women from two different worlds. The film is about self-discovery, for Pinky (essayed by Hajra Yamin) - a young woman from a small village in Punjab who travels to Dubai to work as a maid - and Mehr (Kiran Malik), a Dubai-based writer and socialite. The film is about how the two women, belonging from two different worlds, form an unusual bond despite the unspoken class barriers between them. It also shows the struggle of four individuals who are on a quest to find true happiness amidst work and relationships.
Besides the main characters, Pinky Memsaab – that is now available on Netflix - features Khalid Ahmed, Shamim Hilaly and Hajra Khan in important roles.
