After multiple films inspired from the works of William Shakespeare, such as Omkara, director Vishal Bhardwaj is all set to take on the works of another author.
The filmmaker’s next will be based on Catherine Scott’s book, The Exile: The Stunning Inside Story of Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda in Flight and will center on the Al Qaeda chief and terror kingpin Osama Bin Laden. According to reports, the film is called Abbottabad and follows the story of Osama Bin Laden during the period he was in Tora Bora as well as his last days that were spent in Abbottabad. It is also about the history of the terrorist network, from 2001 to the present and reveals a dark web of familial and political machinations.
The director recently took to Twitter to share his sentiments regarding the project. He said, “Excited to tackle this new subject but also nervous since it’s my biggest challenge with completely new cultures and languages.”
At this point, not much else has been revealed about the project. However, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently shared that he has signed a Vishal Bhardwaj film. We wonder if he’s referring to the same project.
In most cases, films dealing with such subjects tend to promote propaganda. We’ve seen it before in films like Zero Dark Thirty and TV serials like Homeland. One wonders if Bhardwaj’s approach will be different and more sensitive. Plus, his last major release, Rangoon tanked terribly on the box office despite the presence of stars like Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut. Whether the director is able to score a hit with this upcoming film, only time will tell.
