‘Khaak Nasheen’, a majestic ambient-meets-psychedelic rock single that was released last year to critical acclaim by Karachi-based music group Chand Tara Orchestra is all set to reappear on our horizon with a music video that should release any day now. While the song, running a little over seven minutes, unravels like a lucid dream, its lyrical content is drawn from three poems by Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

Nominated in the category of Song of the Year at the Lux Style Awards 2017, though it didn’t win, as far as we’re concerned, the song is in a league of its own much like the band behind it.

With Omran Shafique, Babar Sheikh, Shahryar Raza and Louis J. Pinto (better known as Gumby) making up this powerful music group, we’re not surprised that the song has a meticulous, unhurried and sacred spirit. ‘Khaak Nasheen’ is indicative of a music philosophy that combines folk elements with psychedelic rock and post-rock.

Speaking to Instep about the ‘Khaak Nasheen’ video, Babar Shaikh explained that the music video is directed by final year film students from the media sciences department at Szabist.  “It’s an experimental project. It’s got the real colours of Karachi and shows the real face of its people,” he told Instep.

Watch out for this video, which is being released in partnership with Patari, as it pays ode to the glorious city of Karachi and its many inhabitants. -Maheen Sabeeh
