Fahad Mustafa-starrer Mah-e-Mir, released last year, follows the life of a contemporary poet who draws parallels with the life of Urdu poet Mir Taqi Mir as he struggles to make it big. Directed by Anjum Shahzad, it was an unconventional venture amidst a number of love stories and comedies that have underwhelmed us to say the least. Though it wasn’t a commercial success, Mah-e-Mir has bagged several accolades at various international festivals. Adding to the list is Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival (India) 2017 that honoured the film with two awards: Best Feature Film and Best Music.

“I’m happy that my work is being recognized on various international platforms,” Shahzad told Instep. “We made it for festival circuit and it’s great that it’s been acknowledged there. I don’t agree with it when people say it wasn’t a commercial success, every film doesn’t have to be judged on the same level. There’s room for all sorts of films; some have a large audience, others have a niche audience. We place all of them together. Everybody is a critic here. The way film industry is grooming, critics will also groom with time.”

Produced by Khurram Rana, Sahir Rasheed and Badar Ikram and written by Sarmad Sehbai, Mah e Mir received mixed reviews in Pakistan. Aside from Mustafa, who played the titular character, the film also stars Iman Ali, Sanam Saeed, Alyy Khan and Manzar Sehbai in pivotal roles.
