Music is often a central theme in modern Pakistani films. Shoaib Mansoor’s Khuda Kay Liye and Asim Raza’s Ho Mann Jahaan reiterate that point.

Shaan Shahid’s upcoming film, Arth 2 also places importance on music as the actor will be essaying a rock musician in the film. Similarly, Shoaib Mansoor’s upcoming film, Verna starring Mahira Khan and Haroon Shahid will also have a musical component as the latter will be seen playing the role of a musician.

However, the film that holds most promise within this genre is actually Amir Mohiuddin’s Rangreza, which is set to release this year and features Bilal Ashraf, Gohar Rasheed and Urwa Hocane.

“We can’t confirm the date just yet but we can confirm that the film will be released this year,” shared director Mohiuddin with Instep recently.

Commenting on why music seems to be a recurring theme in our films, Mohiuddin said, “Pakistan’s musical history is very rich. You have legends like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen and Mehdi Hasan. I personally feel that the life of music is longer than that of film. You’ll still listen to music from 30, 40 years ago even though you might not watch films from that era.”

Mohiuddin must have faced a lot of pressure to deliver memorable music in a film that aims to celebrate Pakistan’s musical history. “Yes, there was a lot of pressure to produce a memorable soundtrack but so far we have some really big names on board which is why we’re feeling confident. We have Abida jee, Asrar and Qurram Hussain on board. We even have Fareed Ayaz.”
