Since the trailer and songs of Raees started coming out a few weeks back, fans of Shah Rukh Khan and Mahira Khan raved about the strong chemistry between the two actors. While fans in Pakistan are still waiting for Raees to release at home, it released worldwide on Wednesday, January 25. And it looks like, despite the hype, reviews pertaining to the film are mixed while Pakistan’s revered contemporary star, Mahira Khan, has received mixed to bad reviews for her performance in the film.

Those who have appreciated Mahira’s presence in Raees include Business of Cinema that observed: “Mahira looks amazing throughout the film. She has been the perfect choice for Raees.”

Bollywood Hungama also had good things to say about her while Financial Express found her Bollywood debut impressive.

However, some of the most notable Indian publications are of the view that Mahira is no less than an eye candy in the film. Times of India stated, “Mahira is restricted to songs and a few emotional scenes, but doesn’t really add much. If her purpose was to soften the baddie, it’s lost on the viewer” whereas critics at The Indian Express felt that her performance was not as fresh as it was assumed to be.

“SRK’s romantic interest, Mahira Khan, is not as fresh as she could have been: the coyness is old Bollywood and in a film which should have embraced its masala roots much more firmly, it just sinks,” wrote Indian Express.

Several important publications didn’t give Mahira as much as a mention, which makes one wonder whether the reviews are actually accurate or clouded by patriotism, we can’t say just yet. But since the film is coming out in Pakistan, watch and decide for yourselves.
